ISSUES OF URDU LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

Twenty-two principals of 24 Urdu medium schools in Delhi ignorant of Urdu
In Delhi there are 24 Urdu medium schools under the Delhi government and the same number of principals but sadly enough, as many as 22 of them do not know any Urdu at all. In addition to this, the number of teachers employed in these schools is almost half as compared to other schools and most of them too are ignorant of Urdu but they have been appointed in Urdu medium schools. In view of these bitter facts how it can be expected that Urdu will be promoted in Delhi and how much truth and sincerity is there in Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit’s claims, which she always makes at any function of Urdu or of Muslims that her government is serious about the promotion of Urdu in Delhi in spite of the fact that Urdu along with Punjabi was made the second official language of Delhi about a decade ago?
The other aspect of this sad condition is that Delhi Urdu Academy, which also is a government-funded institution, in addition to its own specific job of promoting Urdu, holding seminars and conferences, giving financial assistance to needy Urdu authors etc. and assisting in publication of their books, giving awards to famous Urdu litterateurs etc. is also made responsible for monitoring the progress of Urdu. If its members visit Urdu medium schools and see the conditions prevailing there, they can very well take up these matters (appointment of non Urdu-knowing principals, teachers, employees etc. in Urdu schools) with concerned government authorities like Director of Education, Zonal directors, education officers, education minister, chief minister etc. and ask them in clear words why such teachers and principals are appointed in Urdu medium schools and also put pressure on them for appointing Urdu knowing people conditions can be improved. They should convince and make them realize that if improvement of educational conditions is not made and standards of these schools are not raised, the doubt and suspicion in the minds of sincere Urdu lovers that appointments of non-Urdu knowing principals and teachers in these schools are the preparing grounds for eliminating Urdu from Urdu medium schools will turn out to be true.
Responsible officers of milli and social organisations like Ayaz Mahmood, convener of Anjuman Urdu Dost Conference, Alimuddin Asa’di, general secretary of Anjuman Ta’mir-e Urdu, Hafiz Muhammad Shahzad, a social worker of Mata Sundary Road, Maulana Abdul Subhan, President of Altamash Khuddamul Hujjaj Committee etc. also expressed their views and said that Delhi Urdu Academy is a responsible institution but education officers and others in the ministry are taking undue advantage of discouraging Urdu because of the insensitivity and lack interest of Academy authorities. A delegation of the Academy should visit Urdu institutions, review the appointment of teachers and pressurize them that no non-Urdu knowing person (principal, teacher etc.) should be appointed in Urdu medium schools and that after the retirement of Urdu knowing teacher etc. only Urdu knowing persons should be appointed in their places. They also stated that when the job of Urdu Academy is to promote Urdu, its officers should regularly visit and review the conditions prevailing in Urdu medium schools, listen and understand the problems and difficulties of children and teachers of these schools and put pressure on the concerned officers in government to fulfill their needs like publication of Urdu books and appointment of Urdu teachers etc.
In view of the fact that these officers are not taking any steps in publication of Urdu books or appointing Urdu teachers deliberately, they should approach higher authorities and insist that these jobs or responsibilities may be given to either the Academy or NCPUL who should get Urdu books published and appoint qualified Urdu teachers themselves, within government rules of course.
Maulana Abdus Subhan said that many Urdu medium schools whose past used to be Urdu medium but because of the staff being unfamiliar with Urdu, they have lost their utility and identity. Zeenat Mahal School at Asif Ali Road is an example of this. This is only because of appointment of teachers not knowing Urdu. Those who claim to be representatives of Muslims or work for Urdu should seriously think about this and take practical steps to correct this system.

BRILLIANT PIECE BY ARUNDHATI ROY ON NEW INDIA

Is it a house or a home? A temple to the new India, or a warehouse for its ghosts? Ever sinceAntilla arrived on Altamont Road in Mumbai, exuding mystery and quiet menace, things have not been the same. “Here we are,” the friend who took me there said, “Pay your respects to our new Ruler.”Antilla belongs to India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani. I had read about this most expensive dwelling ever built, the twenty-seven floors, three helipads, nine lifts, hanging gardens, ballrooms, weather rooms, gymnasiums, six floors of parking, and the six hundred servants. Nothing had prepared me for the vertical lawn—a soaring, 27-storey-high wall of grass attached to a vast metal grid. The grass was dry in patches; bits had fallen off in neat rectangles. Clearly, Trickledown hadn’t worked.
But Gush-Up certainly has. That’s why in a nation of 1.2 billion, India’s 100 richest people own assets equivalent to one-fourth of the GDP.The word on the street (and in the New York Times) is, or at least was, that after all that effort and gardening, the Ambanis don’t live in Antilla. No one knows for sure. People still whisper about ghosts and bad luck, Vaastu and Feng Shui. Maybe it’s all Karl Marx’s fault. (All that cussing.) Capitalism, he said, “has conjured up such gigantic means of production and of exchange, that it is like the sorcerer who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world whom he has called up by his spells”.In India, the 300 million of us who belong to the new, post-IMF “reforms” middle class—the market—live side by side with spirits of the nether world, the poltergeists of dead rivers, dry wells, bald mountains and denuded forests; the ghosts of 2,50,000 debt-ridden farmers who have killed themselves, and of the 800 million who have been impoverished and dispossessed to make way for us. And who survive on less than twenty rupees a day.
Mukesh Ambani is personally worth $20 billion. He holds a majority controlling share in Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), a company with a market capitalisation of $47 billion and global business interests that include petrochemicals, oil, natural gas, polyester fibre, Special Economic Zones, fresh food retail, high schools, life sciences research and stem cell storage services. RIL recently bought 95 per cent shares in Infotel, a TV consortium that controls 27 TV news and entertainment channels, including CNN-IBN, IBN Live, CNBC, IBN Lokmat, and ETV in almost every regional language. Infotel owns the only nationwide licence for 4G Broadband, a high-speed “information pipeline” which, if the technology works, could be the future of information exchange. Mr Ambani also owns a cricket team.
RIL is one of a handful of corporations that run India. Some of the others are the Tatas, Jindals, Vedanta, Mittals, Infosys, Essar and the other Reliance (ADAG), owned by Mukesh’s brother Anil. Their race for growth has spilled across Europe, Central Asia, Africa and Latin America. Their nets are cast wide; they are visible and invisible, over-ground as well as underground. The Tatas, for example, run more than 100 companies in 80 countries. They are one of India’s oldest and largest private sector power companies. They own mines, gas fields, steel plants, telephone, cable TV and broadband networks, and run whole townships. They manufacture cars and trucks, own the Taj Hotel chain, Jaguar, Land Rover, Daewoo, Tetley Tea, a publishing company, a chain of bookstores, a major brand of iodised salt and the cosmetics giant Lakme. Their advertising tagline could easily be: You Can’t Live Without Us.
According to the rules of the Gush-Up Gospel, the more you have, the more you can have. The era of the Privatisation of Everything has made the Indian economy one of the fastest growing in the world. However, like any good old-fashioned colony, one of its main exports is its minerals. India’s new mega-corporations—Tatas, Jindals, Essar, Reliance, Sterlite—are those who have managed to muscle their way to the head of the spigot that is spewing money extracted from deep inside the earth. It’s a dream come true for businessmen—to be able to sell what they don’t have to buy.

Urdu Literature without Borders

Urdu Literature without Borders
Urdu language and literature has a long and colorful history that is inextricably tied to the development of that very language, Urdu, in which it is written. While it tends to be heavily dominated by poetry, the range of expression achieved in the voluminous library of a few major verse forms, especially the Ghazal and Nazm (poetry), has led to its continued development and expansion into other styles of writing, including that of the short story, or Afsana. Urdu literature is principally popular in India and Pakistan. Additionally, it enjoys substantial popularity among South Asian immigrants in North America, Europe and Middle East and usually around the world. It is widely understood in Afghanistan. Urdu is finding interest in North American, European and South Pacific Asian countries primarily through South Asian immigrants.

I pray to Holy God your intellectual practices of multilingualism will be a concern for core academic communities.
Because multilingual scholars are a main pillar of global scholarship they make unique contributions that help reform, expand, and enrich the knowledge base of core disciplinary communities this is certainly a widely accepted idea For example, writers, if all knowledge is situated and personal, then periphery perspectives on different disciplines may provide unique insights also views the situation’s of multilingual scholars in their local communities as strength and notes, it affords uniqueness and closeness of perspective in my point view as above cited multilingual scholars enrich the knowledge base of core academic communities in two important ways one they write about things that mainstream disciplinary communities do not know of and two through accessing works that mainstream academic communities and they draw attention to untapped or unknown resources.
In the light of above statements, it can be argued that limited participation of multilingual scholars in global scholarship will impoverish knowledge production Therefore, it is important that the particular difficulties of multilingual scholars be made public so that the research field can identify ways to help these scholars maintain visibility in the academic forum and contribute more to the core knowledge base.
Therefore, I congratulate you that, you are one is the best multilingual scholars of global scholarship continuously you are giving your best unique contributions to the scholars those are belongs to the world of different languages and literature. God bless you much and more opportunity to enrich the whole Flowerdew, 2000 J.
